Description
San Jose State University is seeking an experienced artist or artist team to develop, design, and create a large outdoor historic landmark mural on the north side of Yoshihiro Uchida Hall near South Fourth Street in downtown San Jose. The project commemorates the university’s role in the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II and is intended to serve as a permanent public art and educational installation. The mural will be approximately 74 feet wide, with specified architectural dimensions and existing decorative features that must remain unchanged. All artistic mediums are permitted within the wall-space limitations. The selected artist or team will collaborate with the Remembrance & Resistance Committee and university stakeholders to finalize the design, rendering, installation, and maintenance plan. The scope includes labor, design, assistants, insurance, travel, equipment, materials, installation, and long-term maintenance recommendations addressing weather, ultraviolet exposure, vandalism, and graffiti. The artwork will become part of San Jose State University’s permanent public art collection, and the artist must provide original concept sketches and grant specified reproduction rights. The solicitation uses a staged evaluation process, including interviews and finalist concept development; four finalists may receive stipends of $2,000 for the selected finalist and $1,000 for each of three additional finalists.
