The City of Ames is hiring a temporary, part-time Registered Veterinary Technician to assist the Animal Control division of the Police Department and provide paraprofessional veterinary medical care for animals at the Ames Animal Shelter. The position is expected to run approximately July through October 2026, with about 25 hours per week on a flexible schedule that may change based on animal intake and staffing needs. Responsibilities include intake health assessments, vaccinations, deworming, flea treatments, medication administration, vital-sign monitoring, diagnostic sample collection, post-surgical monitoring, testing, first aid and emergency treatment, animal restraint, kennel and equipment sanitation, feeding and grooming, recordkeeping, controlled-substance logs, volunteer-program support, and coordination of veterinary appointments. Applicants must have an associate degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program, one year of animal shelter or veterinary assistant experience, a valid driver's license, successful completion of the VTNE and VTSE, and a valid Iowa veterinary technician license or registration.
