Description
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting market research to identify businesses capable of providing specialized geochronology services. These services include mineral separation from tephra samples, U-Pb geochronology screening using LA-ICP-MS, and high-accuracy, high-precision U-Pb geochronology using CA-ID-TIMS. The goal is to determine the absolute age of volcanic ash samples from the North Slope of Alaska, which is critical for understanding petroleum source rock geology and developing paleoceanographic records. The required workflow involves separating zircon from bulk tephra samples, followed by LA-ICP-MS screening to identify volcanic zircons. Based on these results, a plan for CA-ID-TIMS analysis will be developed and executed in consultation with USGS representatives. The analysis must yield high accuracy and precision, with analytical uncertainties on the order of 10^4 - 10^5 years, and the ability to reproduce ages of Mesozoic-Cenozoic geochronologic reference material. Deliverables include data tables, graphical representations of geochronological data, and written reports summarizing analytical protocols, results, and basic geological interpretation. The work is expected to be completed within 180 days of sample receipt, with an estimated start in July 2026.
