The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District plans to issue an unrestricted Request for Proposal for construction services supporting the interim remedial action at the Nelson Tunnel/Commodore Waste Rock Site. The work is intended to reduce the risk of an uncontrolled release of mine-impacted water from underground mine pools. The selected remedy includes constructing a new bypass adit to intersect Nelson Tunnel, rehabilitating the existing tunnel, installing a flow-through hydraulic bulkhead in Nelson Tunnel, and installing an accessible bulkhead flow-control structure in the Commodore 5 level. The notice is a pre-solicitation and states that offers submitted in response to it will not be accepted or evaluated; the formal solicitation is planned for November 2026, with a planned proposal due date in January 2027.
