Description
The City of Waukee is commissioning an artist or artist team to design and paint one cohesive, original mural on the interior walls of a pedestrian and bicycle underpass along the Racoon River Valley Trail. The tunnel measures approximately 12 feet by 10 feet by 164 feet. The artwork should be suitable for public viewing, colorful and engaging, durable and low-maintenance, aesthetically pleasing during day and night and across all seasons, and should reflect wildflowers/nature or convey a welcoming message. The artist is responsible for power washing, priming, site preparation, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, maintenance, and related project costs. Only spray, acrylic-based, and/or exterior paint may be used. The mural is expected to be temporary, with an anticipated lifespan of up to five years. The preliminary maximum project budget is $10,000, inclusive of all project costs. The selected artist or team will be commissioned after an open review process; up to three finalists will receive a $500 stipend to refine their proposals before a final interview. Eligibility requires two completed commissioned indoor or outdoor public artworks, each valued at least $10,000. Applicants must submit a single PDF containing contact information, a letter of interest and design approach, biographies or resumes, three references, work samples, a work-sample list, and an initial concept of no more than three pages; standard JPEG work samples may be submitted separately. The selected artist must be able to participate in a virtual interview if requested.
