Description
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) intends to award a sole source contract to WildSEA Inc. for cetacean and seabird observer services. This role is critical for the International Whaling Commission (IWC)-Pacific Ocean Whale and Ecosystem Research (POWER) survey, which will take place in the southern Gulf of Alaska and eastern North Pacific Ocean. The observer will be responsible for sighting, identifying, and documenting all cetaceans and seabirds, managing a photographic database, and preparing relevant portions of the final cruise report. The position requires extensive experience, including at least 24 months of cumulative experience as a cetacean observer on large vessels, with specific experience in the Gulf of Alaska or similar regions. The candidate must have participated in at least one previous POWER survey due to the unique challenges of the 50-day voyage on a Japanese vessel, including cultural and language barriers. Additional requirements include significant experience in photographing cetaceans for photo identification, managing large digital photographic datasets, identifying both marine mammals and seabirds to species level, and preparing scientific reports. Proficiency in Adobe Lightroom and basic Japanese communication skills are also necessary.
