The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is soliciting applications for the Institutional Biomedical Undergraduate Research Training (BURT) Program (T34). This funding opportunity aims to strengthen research training environments and develop a pool of well-trained undergraduate students who complete baccalaureate degrees in biomedically-related fields and transition into biomedical research-focused higher degree programs such as Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs. Eligible organizations include domestic institutions that enroll undergraduate students and have received NIH Research Project Grant (RPG) funding averaging less than $50 million in total costs per year over the last three fiscal years. The program supports two tracks: Single Site, for trainees from a single baccalaureate-degree granting organization, and Community College Partnerships, which require collaboration between at least one associate-degree granting organization and at least one baccalaureate-degree granting organization. The proposed training programs must incorporate didactic, research, and career development elements. Trainees may not lead independent clinical trials but may gain research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. Applications will be peer-reviewed, and only meritorious applications will be funded.
