The Higher Education Challenge (HEC) Grants Program, administered by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), provides funding to strengthen institutional capacities in food and agricultural sciences education. The program supports projects that develop and improve formal master's or doctorate degree-level education in food and agricultural sciences, as well as first professional degree-level education in veterinary medicine (DVM). Eligible applicants include land-grant institutions and other colleges and universities with demonstrable capacity to teach food and agricultural sciences and confer graduate degrees in at least one discipline. Projects may focus on curriculum development, faculty preparation and enhancement, student recruitment and retention, and facilitating cooperation between institutions. Grant types include Standard Grants (up to $150,000), Collaborative Grant Type 1 (up to $300,000), and Collaborative Grant Type 2 (up to $750,000). Approximately $5.7 million is available for about 36 awards. Applications must be submitted electronically via Grants.gov by October 15, 2026. The application requires a project summary, project narrative, budget justification, mentoring plan, data management plan, collaborative arrangements, expected outcomes, biographical sketches, and current and pending support documents.
