Description
The Township Committee is considering an amendment to the municipal development regulations and zoning ordinance that defines data centers and prohibits them in all zoning districts. The proposed definition covers facilities used for data storage, processing, hosting, and related computing infrastructure, including colocation, cloud-computing, cryptocurrency-mining, artificial-intelligence, and high-performance-computing facilities. The ordinance excludes specified public utility and telecommunications infrastructure, limited-scale computing facilities subject to floor-area, electrical-capacity, infrastructure, and colocation limits, and qualifying residential computing equipment. It also addresses aggregation of related facilities and requests for information to determine whether a use qualifies as a data center. The Planning Board is asked to review the regulations within two years after adoption and in connection with specified future changes. The ordinance would take effect upon final passage, adoption, and publication according to law.
