Description
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is soliciting proposals for a two-year study of a known wood turtle population in the Black Hawk Creek watershed near Waterloo, Iowa. The contractor will conduct field-based visual encounter surveys on foot, capture and document turtles, collect demographic and morphological data, mark individuals, and attach radio transmitters to up to three turtles during the 2026 field season. Radio-tagged turtles must be tracked throughout the 2026 active season and again in spring 2027, with weekly summer and biweekly fall monitoring where conditions allow. The work also includes aquatic and terrestrial habitat assessments, mapping of nesting and overwintering areas, and evaluation of localized threats such as road mortality, agricultural activity, predators, and movement barriers. Deliverables include weekly or biweekly monitoring updates, interim reports following field seasons, a comprehensive final report in standard journal format, spatial files, and associated photographs. Respondents should have at least 10 years of experience tracking wood turtles in Iowa and a valid State of Iowa Scientific Collectors Permit to handle wood turtles.
