This is a technology licensing opportunity for a novel method to produce metallic rare earth elements (REEs) through room-temperature electrometallization in anhydrous electrolytes. This process offers a low-energy, low-hazard alternative to conventional molten-salt electrolysis, which operates at high temperatures (600-1200 °C) and generates toxic byproducts, leading to significant regulatory and environmental challenges. The invention addresses the high cost and regulatory barriers associated with current methods by employing tuned electrolyte nucleophilicity, Lewis acid-base coordination control, and interfacial electrochemical structuring. This approach significantly reduces energy consumption, environmental liabilities, and operational hazards, while also presenting potential for domestic REE production to mitigate supply chain dependence on China. Key market applications for this technology include permanent magnets for electric vehicles and wind turbines, defense systems, lightweight alloys for aerospace and automotive industries, electronics, and advanced battery technologies.
