Description
This technology licensing opportunity from the Department of Energy introduces a dimethyl ether (DME)-driven method for rejuvenating end-of-life lithium-ion battery cells. The approach restores electrochemical performance without dismantling the cell, eliminating shredding, separation, and component reconstruction steps used in conventional recycling. It is designed to preserve the existing electrode architecture for direct reuse rather than raw-material recovery. Preliminary electrochemical data supports technical feasibility. If validated at larger scale, the technology may reduce process complexity, energy and reagent consumption, capital intensity, and operating costs compared with hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recycling. Potential applications include rejuvenating cells from consumer electronics, stationary storage, and transportation; integrating the process into existing recycling facilities; and supporting secondary-use battery pathways.
