Description
The City seeks a qualified attorney to serve as Public Defender for the Winder Municipal Court. Services include representing eligible indigent defendants charged under city ordinances from appointment or screening through trial and sentencing, providing criminal defense at in-custody bail hearings when needed, and meeting with eligible defendants in city custody. The Public Defender must be available to court staff, police, and defendants and provide monthly case reports. The court holds sessions weekly, with arraignments scheduled monthly and trials quarterly. Minimum qualifications include a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, admission to practice law in Georgia, membership in the Georgia State Bar, and at least six months of attorney experience. The proposal must include a resume, cover letter and statement of qualifications, bar numbers for all attorneys, three professional references, a release permitting access to Georgia State Bar disciplinary records, proof and details of professional liability insurance, and a proposed fee schedule. The contract is for one year, with up to four additional one-year renewals by mutual agreement. Associated counsel may be used for no more than 25% of court sessions; proposed subcontractors must be identified and provide a signed statement agreeing to the awarded vendor’s obligations.
