Description
The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest is conducting market research to identify qualified contractors for the humane gathering of free-ranging horses. This Request for Information (RFI) seeks input on methods such as bait trapping, water trapping, and other low-stress capture techniques. The scope includes gathering, handling, holding, care, transportation, and facilitation of the sale of horses, as well as impounding stray animals. The project prioritizes animal health, well-being, and the safety of personnel. Approximately 2,000 horses are estimated to need removal from the Black Mesa and Lakeside Ranger Districts. Contractors are invited to provide information on their company, relevant experience with wildlife management and animal welfare standards, and technical input on effective capture methods, operational designs, and cost-efficiency. The Forest Service is exploring non-helicopter, low-impact methods and seeks recommendations for innovative techniques, safety improvements, and lessons learned from previous projects.
