Description
This contract is for the cutting of 1026 acres of pinyon and juniper trees in the Wassuk Mountains, Nevada. The objective is to improve sage-grouse habitat and reduce wildfire intensity. The work areas are located west of Hawthorne, Nevada, and require access via rough dirt roads, potentially necessitating side-by-side/UTV vehicles. The project involves two units: Baldwin Canyon Unit (317 acres) and Baldwin Highlands Unit (709 acres). Specifications include cutting trees smaller than 24 inches in diameter at ground level, maintaining a post-treatment spacing of approximately 100 feet between live mature tree canopies in Baldwin Canyon Unit, and cutting dead standing trees (snags) with an option to leave one per acre as wildlife trees. All cut material must not protrude higher than 18 inches above the ground. Refueling and vehicle operations must adhere to environmental guidelines, including maintaining distance from water bodies and using existing roads only. The period of performance is from September 15, 2026, to February 28, 2027. The contractor will provide all necessary tools, materials, equipment, and labor. The government will provide treatment area boundaries in digital formats. The contractor is responsible for site cleanup and removal of all refuse to an approved landfill. Equipment moved onto public land must be free of soil, seeds, and vegetative matter. Cultural and sensitive plant/animal resources must be avoided. Fire prevention and suppression measures are critical, and the contractor may be held liable for wildfire suppression costs caused by their activities.
