Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), managed by UT-Battelle, LLC, is developing nested mirror optics (NMOs) for neutron scattering instruments. These NMOs will improve signal-to-background ratios for experiments, particularly those involving small or constrained samples. The project requires polarizing and non-polarizing neutron mirrors with specific Ni/Ti or Fe/Si coatings, as well as silicon wafer substrates coated with neutron absorbers (Gd). These components are intended for use at ORNL's Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) facilities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The specification outlines requirements for materials, fabrication, inspection, testing, and delivery of these neutron mirrors and substrates. Specific details include substrate material (silicon wafer), coating types (Ni/Ti, Fe/Si, Gd), reflectivity and coating thickness parameters, and various sizes and quantities for each item. Testing with neutrons is required to verify coating quality and performance. The lead time from contract award to delivery shall not exceed 3 months.
