Description
The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, in partnership with Friends of Southwest Virginia, is accepting Letters of Interest for the Blue Ridge Rising Milepost Pilot Program. The program will select at least four and no more than five eligible local government entities, nonprofit organizations, or tribal governments to develop and install custom, larger-than-life mileposts inspired by the official Blue Ridge Parkway milepost design. Each selected community will receive one fabricated milepost structure, technical guidance, regional marketing support, and approximately $10,000 in total support. The Foundation will directly incur an estimated $3,000 cost for milepost fabrication and delivery, leaving approximately $7,000 available for artwork and installation costs; applicants should not assume the full amount will be awarded. Funds may not support ground-disturbing activities. Applicants must conduct community engagement, collaborate with and compensate a local artist or creative organization, identify a publicly owned and accessible installation site with parking and safe pedestrian access, obtain required permissions, coordinate installation, provide or arrange an installation-ready foundation, and maintain the installation for at least five years. The proposed structure is approximately six feet tall, three-sided, and made from durable outdoor materials for custom artistic treatments. Applicants must submit a Letter of Interest of no more than three pages, plus a visual sketch and narrative, a letter of commitment from the public entity owning the proposed site, and up to three letters of support from project partners. The Letter of Interest will be evaluated on community support, artistic vision, site suitability, readiness for installation and maintenance, tourism potential, and certain additional regional or community benefits.
