Description
The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) requires a tabletop/benchtop Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with a fully integrated Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDS/EDX). This is a commercial supply requirement. The proposed solution must meet specific salient characteristics including a compact design suitable for standard laboratory counters (under 200 lbs), operation on standard 110 VAC power with an included Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), and a vacuum system requiring minimal user maintenance. The electron optics should feature a Tungsten or Cerium Hexaboride (CeB6) source with user-exchangeability, an accelerating voltage range of 1.0kV to 20.0kV, and a minimum magnification of 150,000x up to at least 350,000x. It must include simultaneous High-performance Backscattered Electron (BSE/BSD) and Secondary Electron (SE/SED) detectors with minimum resolutions of 8nm for BSE and 6nm for SE. Automation features like auto-focus, auto-stigmator, auto-brightness, and auto-gun alignment are standard. An integrated color microscope camera for optical navigation is also required. The sample manipulation system must include a motorized X-Y-Z stage capable of accommodating at least three standard 12.7mm SEM stubs simultaneously, with standard removable sample holder and charger reduction sample holder, and a standard sample preparation starter kit. The EDS capabilities require a fully integrated Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) capable of elemental mapping from Boron to Uranium, with real-time, live-image elemental mapping and qualitative/quantitative analysis. The system must include an included PC workstation with a minimum 24-inch monitor, running a standard operating system with pre-installed SEM/EDX software, keyboard, and mouse. Advanced imaging software for mapping and stitching is also required. On-site system installation and comprehensive user training, along with a minimum 1-year standard warranty, are included.
