Description
NASA is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) to gather capabilities for conducting 7-day hypobaric hypoxia chamber testing. This research aims to investigate the physiological, cognitive, and clinical effects of mild hypobaric hypoxia to inform vehicle atmospheric conditions for the Artemis Program. The testing will involve continuous habitation in a chamber for 7 days, with the first 2 days at ambient conditions for baseline data collection, followed by 5 days at reduced atmospheric pressure simulating either 7000ft or 9500ft altitudes. Each subject will complete two 7-day tests, one at each simulated altitude, in a cross-over design. The scope of work includes providing the necessary infrastructure, personnel, training, materials, food, supplies, and operational support. Key activities involve recruiting and screening participants (approximately 6 subjects per test, with a target demographic similar to astronauts), conducting informed consent sessions, training subjects on protocols and safety, and performing various scientific measurements daily. These measurements encompass symptomology, cognitive performance using ANAM, cognitive workload via NASA-TLX, sleep quality and duration using NoxT3 and actigraphy, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, cardiopulmonary responses at rest and during exercise, blood volume quantification, and blood and saliva sampling for immunological, inflammatory, and other biomarker analyses. Optional work includes data analysis and transmittal of blood and saliva biomarker data, as well as additional testing for more participants. The budget is a firm fixed price, and responses should include costs for interim milestone completion.
