Description
The United States Air Force is seeking proposals for the development of scalable and cost-effective composite joint technologies, specifically carbon fiber pi-joints, to enhance the performance and affordability of future autonomous air systems. The effort aims to overcome the tradeoff between geometric flexibility and mechanical performance in existing composite joint solutions. The project will begin at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 2 and target TRL 6 by the end of Phase II, with validated prototypes demonstrated in a relevant operational environment. Phase I activities include a literature review, design and fabrication of initial pi-joint test articles, development of a preliminary process flow, and delivery of a technical feasibility report. Phase II activities involve optimizing fiber architectures, developing scalable preform manufacturing processes, fabricating additional specimens, conducting mechanical testing, and providing cost models for low-rate and high-rate production. Deliverables include prototypes, tow path diagrams, mechanical test data, manufacturing process documentation, and cost analysis.
