The National Marine Fisheries Service’s Office of Sustainable Fisheries is seeking competitive applications for the Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program. The program supports applied research by non-Federal researchers to develop, test, and advance fishing gears, gear modifications, avoidance programs, improved fishing practices, and other technologies that reduce bycatch, habitat impacts, and post-release or indirect mortality in commercial and recreational fisheries and aquaculture. Projects must address at least one of three priorities: developing innovative bycatch-reduction technologies and practices; further testing or scaling technologies that have already demonstrated success; or improving understanding and reduction of post-release and other indirect mortality. Proposals should identify measurable objectives, methodologies, project milestones, permitting needs, management applicability, industry or fisherman involvement, outreach, evaluation procedures, and a data management plan. Pre-proposals are required before full proposals. The program anticipates approximately 20 to 30 cooperative-agreement awards, generally up to one year, with proposed periods of performance of 12 to 18 months and federal requests generally between $50,000 and $400,000.
