NASA's Technology Transfer Program is soliciting inquiries from companies interested in obtaining license rights to commercialize, manufacture, and market a technology developed at Langley Research Center. The technology is an electrode-based system for guidance, navigation, and control of aircraft or spacecraft moving at hypersonic speeds in ionizing atmospheres. The system consists of two electrodes on the surface of a craft's thermal protection system (TPS) and an electromagnet beneath the TPS. It operates on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) principles, harvesting energy from ionized flow to power the electromagnet and generate Lorentz forces that augment lift and drag for steering and control. The energy can also be stored for later use. This system is simpler than conventional methods and enables new entry, descent, and landing mission architectures. License rights may be exclusive or nonexclusive, and NASA provides no funding. Interested parties must submit a license application through NASA's Automated Technology Licensing Application System (ATLAS). No follow-on procurement is expected.
