The Department of Defense (DoD) announces the Fiscal Year 2027 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP), designed to improve the capabilities of accredited U.S. institutions of higher education to conduct research and educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense. DURIP provides funds for the acquisition of research equipment or instrumentation costing between $50,000 and $3,000,000, with exceptions up to $7,000,000 for priority defense research needs. The total estimated program funding is $28 million. Eligible applicants are accredited U.S. institutions of higher education with degree-granting programs in science, mathematics, and/or engineering; for-profit organizations are not eligible. Proposals must address the impact of the equipment on the institution's ability to educate students through research in disciplines important to DoD missions. The program is administered by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Army Research Office (ARO), and Office of Naval Research (ONR). Awards will be in the form of grants (or cooperative agreements for ARO). Applications must be submitted electronically via Grants.gov by November 6, 2026.
