Description
The City of Roeland Park is seeking proposals from artists, craftspeople, and designers to create a custom, permanent public park bench that combines functional seating with public art inspired by native Midwest ecology and community inclusiveness. The bench must be approximately six feet long, meet specified seat and backrest dimensions, avoid safety hazards, provide adjacent companion space for a wheelchair, stroller, or mobility scooter, include supportive armrests, and incorporate tactile elements for people with visual impairments. The completed bench must use durable, temperature-stable materials suitable for Midwest weather and public use, with UV-resistant and graffiti-resistant finishes and tamper-proof, corrosion-resistant hardware. The artist's all-inclusive fee, including design, engineering and safety drawings, materials, fabrication, and delivery, may not exceed $10,000. The City will handle and fund the concrete pad and final anchoring installation. Proposals must be submitted as a single PDF and include a concept narrative, visual renderings, materials and installation plan, itemized budget, proposed timeline, artist biography and portfolio, and evidence of ability to produce a similarly scaled finished product. Delivery is targeted for December 14, 2026, with installation expected in spring 2027.
