Description
The Department of Historic Resources (DHR) is seeking proposals for projects to document historic resources in 37 localities across central and southwestern Virginia that were impacted by Hurricane Helene, as per FEMA Major Disaster Declaration DR-4831. These projects will be funded by a $2,000,000 award from the National Park Service's Emergency Supplemental Historic Preservation Fund (ESHPF). Proposals are eligible from local governments, planning district commissions, state and federally recognized tribes, and nonprofit organizations. Eligible activities include identification, documentation, evaluation, and preservation planning to aid in recovery and future disaster preparedness. A key component will be the nomination of at least one historic district to the National Register of Historic Places. The goal is to create a comprehensive inventory of historic resources in the affected areas to improve response to disasters and daily threats, while also documenting the community's human history. Proposals must be submitted exclusively through DHR's WebGrants portal at https://vadhr.webgrantscloud.com/index.do. The deadline for submissions is September 18, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. All selected projects will be administered by DHR under NPS supervision and must receive NPS approval before commencement.
