Description
The City of Los Angeles Fire Department is seeking a contracted physician to serve as Assistant Medical Director for its Emergency Medical Services Bureau. The consultant will collaborate with the Medical Director on EMS operations, planning, training, education, quality improvement, policy and procedure development, data analysis, case and incident review, medical direction, and oversight of advanced practitioners and EMS programs. The amended scope removes the Urban Search & Rescue medical team manager responsibility but retains potential duties involving emergency dispatch, mobile integrated health, disaster medical assistance, helicopter and ocean rescue support, hazardous materials response, occupational health, controlled-drug oversight, field response, and liaison activities with hospitals, EMS agencies, and medical institutions. The position may require up to 40 hours per week structured over seven days, with regular office presence; remote work may be permitted at the discretion of department leadership. Minimum qualifications include an MD or DO, completion of an accredited emergency medicine residency and EMS fellowship, active emergency medicine practice, an unrestricted California physician license, an unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration license, board eligibility in emergency medicine and emergency medical services subspecialty, and an active California driver's license. Proposals must include a cover letter, work plan, experience and references, personnel qualifications, fee schedule, additional data if applicable, and specified City compliance forms and affidavits. The contract is intended to run for one year with two one-year extension options, subject to City approval and funding. The anticipated start date is in 2027 after the City's approval process. Pricing must include hourly fees and a maximum total cost, including the optional extension periods and all expenses.
