The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is soliciting grant applications for the Urban, Indoor, and Other Emerging Agricultural Production Research, Education, and Extension Initiative (UIE). This program aims to support research, education, and extension activities that address key production and market challenges within the full food value chain, from production to market development. Applications must align with the FY2026 Priority Focus of identifying and promoting horticultural, social, and economic factors crucial for successful agricultural production in high-population-density settings, indoor environments, and other emerging agricultural approaches. Local community organizations must be included in project teams, with priority given to proposals involving cooperation among multiple eligible applicants. Eligible entities include State Agricultural Experiment Stations, Colleges and universities, University research foundations, Other research institutions and organizations, Federal agencies, National laboratories, Private organizations, foundations, or corporations, Individuals, or any group consisting of two or more of these entities. The total anticipated program funding for FY2026 is approximately $4,000,000, with individual award ranges from $50,000 to $500,000. Projects should focus on strengthening income or employment, enhancing quality of life and access to nutritious food, demonstrating economic returns, encouraging private industry investment, and reducing barriers to land access. Applicants must clearly articulate the need, their approach, expected results, and how these will be measured and sustained.
