Description
The U.S. Department of Defense is seeking an expeditionary system that converts solar energy, water, and ambient or concentrated carbon dioxide into methanol fuel for direct or reformed fuel-cell systems. The system should support the daily power requirements of up to four Soldiers and operate in remote, austere environments with minimal Soldier interaction and minimal heat signature. The proposed system should produce a 66% methanol-in-water fuel stream at a target rate of at least 0.5 liters of methanol per hour under favorable conditions, use a 0.5-liter potable-water input cartridge, weigh no more than 90 pounds, and occupy no more than 0.5 cubic meters. It should be suitable for ground deployment or mounting on a light tactical off-road vehicle, ideally support alternative power sources such as military-standard generators or wind, and remain near ambient temperature for reduced infrared detectability.
