Los Alamos National Laboratory offers a licensing opportunity for a novel protein-based technology that captures and concentrates rare earth elements from complex liquid mixtures. The technology uses an engineered version of the Lanmodulin protein, modified with an encapsulation peptide, which self-assembles into biomolecular condensates upon binding rare earth elements. These condensates can be separated via centrifugation, filtration, or sedimentation, eliminating the need for column-based immobilization. The modular design allows adaptation with different Lanmodulin variants for selective capture across various feedstocks, supporting applications in critical minerals recovery, mining, waste recycling, environmental remediation, and biomanufacturing. The technology is at TRL 3 and has a U.S. patent pending.
