Description
The National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships is soliciting concise written proposals for NSF X-Labs teams addressing the “From Sequence to Function” bioengineering topic. Proposed teams must develop transformative, broadly deployable platform technologies that reliably link protein sequence and structure to biological function and enable the intentional design of proteins or entire genomes with predictable or controllable functions. Relevant approaches may include protein design and synthesis, genome assembly, synthetic cells, experimental functional discovery and validation, and computational methods that accelerate engineering of proteins or synthetic cells. The written proposal must describe the team’s mission, technology landscape, expected outcomes, senior/key personnel qualifications, and team capabilities and governance. The proposal is limited to eight single-sided pages, with a separate Conflict of Interest statement, and both PDFs must be no larger than 1.5 MB. NSF anticipates a Phase 0 of approximately 9–12 months, followed by potential Phase 1 support of approximately 24–36 months; Phase 0 awards are anticipated to be no more than $1.5 million and Phase 1 awards no more than $50 million per year. Teams must address biosafety and biosecurity considerations, including dangerous gain-of-function risks and mitigation for their proposed mission and pilot domains.
