Description
The U.S. Navy seeks a Direct to Phase II SBIR prototype that remotely collects minimally invasive capillary blood samples from free-ranging cetaceans. The effort will further develop an existing human capillary blood collection device into a system deployable by pole or drone using suction-cup tag deployment techniques. The prototype must include the blood collection device, waterproof housing, delivery device, and suction-cup attachment. It should collect 200–800 µL of capillary blood into an internal reservoir, mix samples with anticoagulants or stabilizers, prevent seawater intrusion, accommodate varying epidermal thicknesses, and produce results comparable to standard venipuncture. The device must make a narrow incision, detach within a specified time or depth threshold, and address clotting, lancing depth, pressure variation, and hemolysis detection. The target device size is approximately 3.40 × 2.25 × 1.30 inches and 0.85–0.95 ounces, excluding the suction-cup housing.
