The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued guidance to help schools comply with the Michigan Filter First Legislation, which includes the Clean Drinking Water Access Act (2023 PA 154) and amendments to the Child Care Organizations Act (1973 PA 116). This legislation requires all schools to develop a Drinking Water Management Plan (DWMP), install filters to reduce lead on consumptive fixtures, and sample filtered water. The guidance details steps for developing the DWMP, selecting filtered bottle-filling stations and faucet filters that meet NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction and NSF/ANSI 42 for Class I particulate reduction, preparing for installation, flushing the water system, and properly installing and maintaining the filters. It also outlines requirements for posting signs at taps, retaining the DWMP for at least five years, and conducting annual lead sampling at all filtered stations and faucets.
