The Department of Energy (DOE) is issuing a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for research and development (R&D) projects aimed at improving recovery efficiency from unconventional oil and natural gas reservoirs and advancing technologies for the treatment and beneficial use of produced water. The NOFO is divided into four topic areas: Topic Area 1a focuses on field test site R&D for enhanced recovery from unconventional reservoirs using injectants other than CO2; Topic Area 1b focuses on advanced characterization of fracture propagation, proppant behavior, and well diagnostics; Topic Area 1c focuses on enhanced recovery using CO2; and Topic Area 2 focuses on advanced field-testing of multi-scale produced water treatment technologies. The total available federal funding is up to $150 million, with a minimum 20% cost share required for most topic areas. The period of performance is estimated to be 60 months, with an anticipated start date of May 3, 2027. Applications must be submitted via the NETL eXCHANGE portal by September 8, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET.
