Description
The Subsurface Energy R&D Investment Program is a provincial initiative designed to evaluate Nova Scotia's onshore hydrocarbon potential while advancing geological knowledge, assessing resource viability and extraction methods, and maintaining environmental stewardship and transparency. The program offers financial incentives to operators conducting exploration activities, including exploratory drilling, as part of a controlled research initiative focused on subsurface geology and drilling and stimulation technologies. Successful proponents will negotiate a Petroleum Exploration Agreement granting exclusive rights to explore for and produce oil and gas from agreed lands for a three-year term, renewable up to twice for a total of nine years. Applicants should be capable of commencing exploratory drilling in 2027 and must comply with applicable safety, regulatory, and governance requirements.
