The University of Virginia is seeking qualified architectural and engineering firms to provide design services for the adaptive reuse of an existing 40-bed, 68,000-square-foot transitional care hospital as an inpatient behavioral health facility. The scope includes first-floor security and support modifications while keeping existing imaging services operational during construction, semi-private and private inpatient rooms on the second floor, additional inpatient beds and electroconvulsive therapy functions on the third floor, support services on all levels, and evaluation of outdoor-space opportunities, infrastructure, spatial constraints, zoning, and code implications. Firms must demonstrate experience designing comparable facilities in higher-education settings, experience with the Virginia Higher Education Capital Outlay Manual, LEED certification experience, design and construction administration capabilities, and experience with construction-manager/subcontractor participation and sequential trade packages. The initial submission is a qualifications package; shortlisted firms will later receive a detailed RFP and participate in interviews.
