Description
The City of Cedar Rapids will be issuing a solicitation for the 8th Avenue Bridge Replacement over the Cedar River. The existing bridge, constructed in 1937, is structurally deficient and requires replacement. The new bridge will be a single tower cable-stayed bridge with a 710-foot overall length and a 229-foot tower height. It will feature a steel girder superstructure with a composite concrete deck, approach roadway construction, floodwall construction, MSE wall construction, demolition of the existing bridge, and reconstruction of riverfront trails. The project also includes earthwork, concrete CIP, precast deck panels, structural steel, drilled shafts, and HP piles. The bridge will be elevated approximately 15 feet above the existing bridge to serve as a lifeline crossing during major floods. Construction is expected to take 3.5 construction seasons from December 2026 to August 2030. The contractor may use a temporary in-river causeway for construction and demolition, subject to floodplain permit conditions.
