Description
The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is planning a project to replace the existing telecommunications tower at the Mt. Helmcken Communications site with a new guyed tower. This project is scheduled for August 2026 and will be conducted in four phases. Phase 1 involves CCG crews removing antennas and salvageable equipment from the current small tower and installing them on existing radar towers. Phase 2 includes the construction of a new concrete base for the guyed tower by the contractor, which will involve rock drilling, vegetation grubbing, and soil removal. This phase also includes the installation of guy wire anchors and the removal of up to ten trees to make way for new guylines. Environmental assessments have been conducted for sensitive plant species. In Phase 3, a tower installation company will be contracted to design and construct the new guyed tower on the prepared base. The new tower will be similar in height to the existing one. Finally, in Phase 4, the CCG rigging crew will transfer all communication equipment from the existing tower to the new tower.
