Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is offering licensing opportunities for their Heat Pipe Reactor Wick and Fill Platform technology. This technology enhances the reliability of high-temperature heat pipe reactors by improving critical wick structure manufacturing and the process of filling, sealing, and quality checking heat pipe arrays. The platform is particularly beneficial for applications in nuclear energy, space, and other high-heat environments, offering a more practical approach to building durable thermal hardware with reduced manufacturing bottlenecks. The wick fabrication methods include controlled shaping techniques such as drawing, hydroforming, or modular splicing, followed by diffusion bonding to create strong, porous tubes with precise pore structures and geometries. These methods are designed to withstand demanding thermal conditions and alkali metal environments. The fill platform automates the loading, sealing, and inspection of heat pipe arrays under controlled atmosphere conditions, utilizing precision metering, controlled handling, and laser welding to improve repeatability and minimize contamination risk. Integrated quality control measures, including inspection of porous structures, leak testing, and fill verification, support consistent reactor-scale production. Key advantages of this technology include support for high-temperature heat transport, improved manufacturability of complex wick structures, increased reliability and consistency in heat pipe production, and scalable filling, sealing, and inspection processes. It is well-suited for long-life, high-purity alkali-metal systems and compact, passive thermal management applications. Market applications span Nuclear Energy (microreactors, reactor heat transport), Space (space reactors, power conversion), Aerospace, Defense, Advanced Manufacturing, and Industrial Energy Systems. LANL may also loan a full-scale prototype of the alkali metal heat-pipe fill system. US Patent Nos. 12,007,171-B1 and US 11,633,806-B1 are associated with this technology.
