The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) is announcing the Brain Repair of Any Injured Neural Structure (BRAINS) Exploratory Topic program. This initiative aims to develop technologies for regrowing in situ normal region-specific brain tissue from transplanted precursor tissue, addressing the significant disability and cost associated with brain damage from various causes. The BRAINS program will focus on two technical areas: TA1, which involves defining and generating precursor tissue for brain regions other than the neocortex, and TA2, which focuses on optimizing the surgical engraftment of precursor tissue into adult brains using preclinical models. The program is structured into two 18-month phases, with a down-selection at the end of Phase I based on go/no-go milestones. A virtual Proposers' Day will be held on June 9, 2026, to provide information about the BRAINS program, its goals, and the structure for upcoming Innovative Solutions Openings (ISOs). While attendance is not mandatory for proposal submission, it is encouraged for potential proposers to gain a better understanding of the effort. A live Q&A session and optional sidebar meetings will follow.
