Description
The New York State Department of State is soliciting applications for its Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Program for the 2026-2027 cycle. This program aims to provide funding for eligible municipalities, community-based not-for-profit organizations, and NYC Community Boards to establish or implement strategies for community redevelopment. The funding supports projects that address areas affected by historical disinvestment, vacant and blighted properties, and the presence or potential presence of brownfields. Four types of activities are eligible for funding: Pre-Planning (area-wide site identification and preliminary analysis), Planning (development or update of a BOA Plan culminating in a nomination for State BOA Designation), Predevelopment Activities (advancing redevelopment within a State-Designated BOA), and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (site investigation and sampling within a State-Designated BOA). The program emphasizes a community-wide approach to brownfield assessment and redevelopment, aiming to transform impacted areas into community assets that create businesses, jobs, and revenues. The total funding available is approximately $2,000,000, with state assistance not exceeding 90% of total eligible project costs. Minimum grant requests are $100,000, with maximums varying by activity type.
