Description
The Department of War seeks research and development of lightweight protection materials that combine rigid load-bearing behavior with flexible, conformable behavior for personal protection, vehicle safety, and shielding sensitive electronics. The effort focuses on polycatenated architected materials—three-dimensional, chainmail-like structures produced through additive manufacturing—whose geometry enables solid- and fluid-like responses, element reorganization, sliding, rotation, and tunable energy dissipation. The selected team will investigate element and linkage materials, geometries, and spacing; design, process, characterize, and simulate structures under tensile, compressive, impact, and rheological loading; and compare performance with legacy impact-attenuating materials such as foams used in knee pads, elbow pads, and helmet pads. The work includes collaboration with Army scientists and engineers on design, manufacturing, and testing, with the intended result of material-design tools for customized expeditionary Soldier protection structures.
