Description
NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center requires a large-scale manufacturing technology demonstration using laser powder directed energy deposition (LP-DED). The contractor must fabricate a NASA HR-1 heat-sink chamber, a nickel-alloy heat-sink chamber, representative qualification and process-characterization samples, witness coupons, and related build plates and tooling. The work includes engineering support, model and toolpath development, machine setup and operation, inert-gas processing, consumables, maintenance, part removal, laser-scan inspection, and reporting. The demonstrated system must support components exceeding 90 inches in height and 80 inches in diameter, with a minimum 60-inch-diameter by 72-inch build volume and approximately 1 mm wall thickness capability. The printing effort is to be completed within 75 consecutive days, or approximately 1,170 machine hours, using NASA-approved NASA HR-1 Fe-Ni and nickel-based alloys. Deliverables include chamber hardware, witness coupons, build reports, and inspection reports. The period of performance is six months from authority to proceed.
