Description
This STTR topic seeks innovative design and demonstration of bio-inspired teams of untethered underwater vehicles, each 1–5 meters long, capable of operating in salt water to depths of 50 feet. Proposed systems must target at least 4 meters per second, with an objective of 6 meters per second or higher, while improving cost of transport, range, endurance, and quietness over the state of the art. Conventional propellers and water jets are outside the scope. Proposals should use physical models and sufficiently high-fidelity three-dimensional simulations to investigate hydrodynamic interactions, including vehicle positioning relative to wakes and body deformation. Designs should address power transmission, state-of-the-art energy storage, sensing and dynamic control, acoustic energy reduction, path planning using off-the-shelf components, scaled-manufacturing cost, supply-chain risks, and mitigation measures. Path-planning research and energy-storage research are outside the scope.
