This project aims to reduce hazardous wildland fuel loading in the Tilden Nature Area near Jewel Lake and the Tilden Little Farm. The scope includes the removal of eucalyptus trees and heavy surface fuel accumulations such as down trees, logs, slash, and branches. The goal is to create a retained forest canopy of well-spaced, healthy eucalyptus and native vegetation. The approximate budget for this project is between $600,000 and $700,000. Contractors will be responsible for biomass removal, with potential subsidies available from external sources like Woodland DTE. Specifics regarding tree limbing, understory tree preservation, creek buffer zones, herbicide use, and selection criteria have been detailed. The contractor will be responsible for monitoring trails for safety during felling operations and coordinating with park representatives for trail closures. Work near the Little Farm and Environmental Education Center will require extra care to ensure the safety of the facility and its users. Pruning of retained eucalyptus is expected up to 30 feet or higher as directed, but is a lesser priority than removals. Stumps marked blue in Unit 1 must be recut and treated with herbicide, as must any resprouting stumps not marked blue. Selection factors will include cost and a detailed plan for project implementation, considering the challenges of the work area and biomass removal routes.
