The Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather industry input on the potential beneficial reuse and repurposing of approximately 530,000 gallons of heavy water (deuterium oxide, D2O) currently stored at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina. The heavy water, left over from past tritium and plutonium production reactor operations, is stored in moderator tanks and drums and contains varying levels of contaminants, including tritium. DOE-EM is seeking input on potential applications for this material to support domestic scientific, medical, and industrial needs, such as neutron moderation, research and development, medical isotope production, or reactor coolant. The RFI also explores the potential for interested parties to lease land or develop facilities on the SRS site for heavy water processing or repurposing activities. Respondents are asked to provide information on their technical capabilities, volume requirements, waste management plans, and interest in on-site facility development. This is a request for information only and does not constitute a funding opportunity. Responses must be submitted electronically to heavywaterrfi@doe.gov with the subject line "EM Heavy Water RFI Collaboration Response" by September 21, 2026.
