Description
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health seeks applied research and technology-development efforts that can advance practical technologies for improving mine worker safety and health. Work may include developing or adapting prototypes for mining environments, evaluating emerging technologies, demonstrating mature technologies at mine sites, and analyzing data to identify hazards and future technology needs. Areas of interest include computer vision and sensor fusion, real-time personal monitoring for respirable dust and crystalline silica, and technologies to improve lithium-ion battery safety in underground mines. The solicitation emphasizes technologies with a credible path to implementation and does not seek theoretical or basic research. This is a two-stage process: offerors first submit a concept paper, and only those invited after a favorable evaluation may submit a full proposal. The concept paper must include a cover page, an abbreviated statement of work, and key personnel and bibliography information. Invited full proposals require separate technical, pricing, and administrative volumes, including a pricing narrative and the provided pricing spreadsheet. Estimated total funding is $4 million, with approximately six to 10 awards anticipated; individual awards are expected to range from $200,000 to $400,000, with exceptional proposals considered up to $650,000. The preferred performance period is 24 to 36 months, with up to 48 months considered when justified.
