Description
NASA seeks proposals led by U.S. institutions of higher education for a multidisciplinary research institute focused on enabling future rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) design capabilities. The work is expected to identify and quantify performance losses, develop and demonstrate mitigation approaches, and create and validate computational models and design tools. The research must address liquid oxygen/liquid methane RDRE systems and culminate in the design, fabrication, and testing of an integrated thrust chamber assembly at 5,000 lbf or greater, targeting at least a 3% specific-impulse improvement over a comparable conventional engine. The solicitation uses a two-step process: mandatory preliminary proposals are required, and only invited teams may submit full proposals. The lead institution must be a U.S. institution of higher education, and the team must include at least three participating U.S. institutions of higher education. At least 1% cost sharing is required, subject to stated exceptions. The award may run for up to five years, with a maximum total award of $13 million.
