Description
This SBIR feasibility study seeks system design options for a resilient, ad hoc positioning, navigation, and timing network for distributed autonomous operations in contested electromagnetic environments. The proposed architecture would use optical inter-UAS crosslinks as both high-capacity coherent communications links and distributed navigation sensors, supporting precision time transfer, optical direction finding, ranging, state-vector exchange, and navigation corrections. The formation-level objective is to maintain navigation accuracy of 8–11 meters circular error probable or better across a 200–300 nautical-mile formation over feature-sparse terrain, using approximately 8–12 optical hops with 20–30 nautical-mile per-hop ranges. Proposals must address shared navigation solutions, error growth, resilience to node or link loss, Group 3 UAS size, weight, and power constraints, acquisition and tracking precision, link budget, time-transfer and ranging accuracy, distributed estimation, and atmospheric and operational robustness.
