The USDA Forest Service, through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), is soliciting applications for the Community Forest and Open Space Conservation Program (CFP). This competitive grant program provides up to $1,000,000 per award for the fee simple acquisition of private forest land in the Lake Superior Basin of Michigan and Wisconsin. Eligible applicants include federally recognized Indian Tribes, local governments, and qualified nonprofit organizations. Projects must involve forested properties at least five acres in size, threatened by conversion to non-forest uses, and provide community benefits such as economic, environmental, educational, and recreational benefits. Priority is given to projects that improve functional habitat connectivity within the defined Terrestrial Habitat Connectivity Pilot Area, demonstrate exceptional public benefits, and involve meaningful community engagement. A 50% cost share is required. The total estimated program funding is $3,500,000, with 4-6 awards expected. Applications are due December 8, 2026, and must be submitted via Grants.gov.
