Description
The Maryland Canal Towns Reinvestment & Revitalization Initiative provides competitive reimbursement grants for rehabilitation of endangered or underutilized historic properties in eligible Maryland canal towns and adjacent communities. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, units of local, county, or state government, and private commercial or income-producing property owners. Properties must generally be listed in the National Register of Historic Places, be nonresidential and nonreligious, be located within designated zones near the Chesapeake & Ohio, Chesapeake & Delaware, or Susquehanna & Tidewater canals, and meet other program requirements. Grant awards range from $20,000 to $150,000, with approximately $572,844 expected to be awarded to 5 to 10 projects. A minimum 25% cash or in-kind match is required. Funds may support construction and rehabilitation hard costs, including structural repairs, roofing, masonry, windows and doors, storefronts, building-system upgrades, accessibility improvements, energy-efficiency upgrades, project signage, and eligible predevelopment architectural or engineering services. Projects must include exterior work and comply with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Awards are reimbursed after eligible work and documentation are completed; no advances are provided. Applications must be submitted through the online grant platform, with supporting documentation such as proof of historic-register status, tax-exempt status, photographs, a budget, proof of matching funds, a project timeline, plans or renderings, contractor estimates, organizational information, and applicable consent or support letters.
